other accreditations

(For further information click on the logos below).

ECB Clubmark Brentwood CC was one of the first clubs in Essex to be awarded with the ECB ClubMark accreditation whereby we demonstrated that we are fully equipped in every sense to look after youngsters and promote cricket to the youth of the community.

To comply with ClubMark regulations we have a Child Welfare Officer and we ensure that sufficient qualified coaches and supplementary helpers are always available to look after all of our colts.

All of our coaches and helpers have undergone Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks and the coaches have taken first aid courses in addition to their cricket coaching courses.

You can rest assured that your children are in safe hands at the club.

ECB We are also one of the ECB's "Focus Clubs" in Essex. The ECB invited every first-class county to submit details of clubs in their county who they believed were torch-bearers for cricket for the future - especially in terms of youth development.

The 38 County Boards underwent an intensive two-year planning process to identify 1,453 Focus Clubs nationwide. Essex, through Essex County Cricket Board, selected Brentwood CC as one of their chosen few.

A Focus Club is one that has been identified for a clear strategic reason, and one that is committed to long-term junior development.

Essex Sports ClubSX ClubSX has similar objectives to ClubMark but is Essex-based, rather than being a national initiative. We had to meet a set of criteria, as laid down by the county, to ensure that the club is run with sufficient levels of professionalism and safety. Brentwood CC received 'Gold' accreditation.

background

Brentwood Cricket Club

Sport has been played at The Old County Ground for well over 100 years. In the last quarter of the 19th Century it was the home of Essex County Cricket Club and in 1881 the County agreed that the newly formed Brentwood Cricket Club could make the ground its home. Tennis started at the ground on or around the start of the 20th Century and in 1910 Brentwood Hockey Club made the ground its home.

The County Ground Club was formed in 1955 when the Hockey, Cricket and Tennis Clubs agreed to amalgamate whilst retaining their separate identities. Since that time there has been a substantial investment in our facilities and The Old County Ground can rightly be regarded as one of the finest sporting arenas in the County offering a range of sporting, social and other facilities to the people of Brentwood. We are truly a community club with a long standing commitment to youth development.

Contracts were exchanged in early 2003 on the purchase of the Old County Ground with completion made on 14th April. The Cricket Club's share of the bank loan required to complete the purchase is approximately £38,000 so all we have to worry about now is repaying it. Interest free loans (minimum £1000) or donations (no minimum) would be most welcome. Any member wanting to make a contribution should contact Jon Coote or any other member of the committee.

location

The Old County Ground is situated at the eastern end of Brentwood High Street only 10 minutes drive away from Junction 28 of the M25. It is within one mile of both Shenfield and Brentwood railway stations and only a 23 minute rail ride from London's Liverpool Street Station. Brentwood High Street and its array of lively pubs and restaurants is only two minutes walk away. Click here for a map of the ground and surrounding area or here for a bird's eye view.

our ground

It is difficult to do justice to the beauty of The Old County Ground. It was featured in the 1969 Wisden Cricketers Almanac which concluded that 'of all the Essex grounds, the tree surrounded acres of Brentwood are the most beautiful .... to play at Brentwood is to feel that one is playing in the grounds of some vast country mansion - which is virtually true.'

Just over 90 years ago a leading executive of the Canadian National railway, Mr Robert Montgomery Horne-Payne, brought his bride to Brentwood and purchased 80 acres of land including The Old County Ground alongside which he built Merrymeade, a magnificent country house. Mr and Mrs Horne-Payne were great supporters of the Club and used to watch games under the shade of a great oak tree which was once part of the playing area in the same way as its more famous counterpart at The County Ground in Canterbury.

Over the years a number of memorable matches have been played at the Old County Ground.

During the cricket season, the ground may be available for private hire provided it is not already being used. For further details, contact Tom Reilly via our Contact Details page.

brentwood cricket club

(Affiliated to the England and Wales Cricket Board)

Founded in 1881 the Cricket Club has approximately 100 senior members and a further 100 junior members at every age group from Under-11s to Under-17s (although we will take children as young as eight if they show a particular interest and aptitude). We run six Saturday sides, all in the Essex League (the 5th and 6th XIs play in the 4th XI League), one Sunday side, no Ladies team at present, and subs range from £20 for a Social Member to £120 for a Full Playing Member.

The Club has a rich history and its association with Essex County Cricket Club has always been close. County and other representative cricket has been regularly played at the ground over the past 100 years. Several England players have worn the Club's colours over recent years, most recently Nick Knight and Gavin Hamilton.
